Celebrate The Game has a new face

Our project to create a better environment both on and off the playing fields, Celebrate The Game, is something we are very proud of. With this years tournament we have developed the communication around the project.
– We’re making the campaign even happier, says Niclas Freiholtz, Competition General.

Gothia Cup is all about joy, fellowship, personal development and creating memories. That’s why it’s important that we do everything we can to help the participant experience just that. The project Celebrate The Game is a part of that work.

– It’s a campaign where we’re trying to explain and simplify the message about how to behave on and around the playing field, says Niclas Freiholtz.

The project involves match delegates who help overlook the games and be around if something happens. In addition to the delegates there are referee observers that will see to the referees wellbeing and development.
– This, along with our more informative elements, constitutes a unity that we call Celebrate The Game.

The more informative elements that Niclas Freiholtz is referring to are – among other things – plates and signs with messages and reminders about how to behave against one another.
– This is one of the greatest initiatives we’ve ever taken. The experience has been very positive amongst the participants when we started having delegates at the games. There is always someone to turn to.

– In general we see that with our communication around the project, participants and leaders and parents really experience an eye-opener with the message we want to mediate. It really sticks. So the project has had a very positive effect on the whole tournament.

What’s new this year in the Celebrate The Game-campaign?

– This year we have added even more referee observers. Every referee should be able to receive feedback and a personal evaluation, to help them and strengthen them in their work.
– And then we’re making the campaign even happier. We now have a mascot in the form of a dog that will bring joy, reconnaissance and stand as an ambassador for the project. He will show up in our communication and our mobile sticker pack. It is a great way to put a face on Celebrate The Game and to help more people recognize the campaign.

News about Gothia Cup Abu Dhabi

As already informed Gothia Cup will expand to Abu Dhabi. It will be a fantastic spot for a fantastic youth tournament.

– We will experience impressive logistics, in arriving to Abu Dhabi as well as getting around in Abu Dhabi. The accommodation will be high standard but at reasonable prices. Beaches, shopping, amusement parks and soccer facilities will be found around the hotels. Everything of world-class quality, says General Manager Dennis Andersson.

The intention was to arrange the tournaments premiere in Januari 2019. After reviewing all plans the decision has been made that the tournament will be postponed.

– This is a great commitment, both to ourselves and to our co-partners, and we want make sure everything is executed as well as possible before we launch. That’s why we want to wait for all prerequisites to be in place and everything prepared completely before the premiere tournament.

– Therefore we decided that the first Gothia Cup Abu Dhabi will take place during the first week of January 2020, says Dennis Andersson.

The exact dates, prices, age-classes and other important information will be presented after this summer.

Last year’s success with a virtual football tournament will be back to Gothia Cup in 2018. During May, the digital competition will be held, ending with a big final during the Gothia Cup week in Gothenburg. And this year we open up for youths from the whole world to participate.

“It will be a digital meeting place that opens up for the whole world,” said Niclas Freiholtz, Gothia eCup Competition Manager.

The tournament was held for the first time in 2017, then with only Swedish participants. The tournament lasted four weeks and nearly 1,200 people participated in the competition.

” Eight people qualified for the final and where invited to Gothenburg to play the last matches. Rasmus Nyström from Stockholm became the winner, or as we remember him – “RalleGnaget”, says Niclas.

This year, the game model is similar, with the big difference that the competition is opened to participants from all over the world.

As long as you have access to an Xbox or Playstation, anyone in the world can compete. The only limitation is that you should be between 12 and 18 years old.

Gothia eCup will be played for four weeks in May, where seven finalists will qualify and win a trip to Gothenburg when it’s time for the final during the Gothia Cup week. The last and eighth finalist will qualify as a wildcard during the Gothia Cup week in Gothenburg, a few days before the big final.

Competition leader Niclas Freiholtz is pleased to be able to present Gothia eCup for the second year, and he is very excited about the major international venture.

“The Gothia Cup shall be a meeting place for the youths of the world, but there are many who do not have the opportunity to go to Gothenburg. Here we create an opportunity for those who may not belong to a team or not be able to play football. They are given the opportunity to participate in a global football tournament in this way instead, says Niclas.

Already now you can enter and create your profile. This is done on the competition platform at During the competition period you will be matched with other players that are logged in at the same time. You will have the opportunity to chat and access each other’s ID so that you can find each other via the game console.

The competition is held on both Playstation and Xbox and the game that is valid this year is FIFA 18.

“There were over 1,200 participants last year, which we see as a huge success considering it was our first year. We hope now with one year’s knowledge and the global platform that even more players will participate this year, “says Niclas Freiholtz.
