This Summer Japan will be represented by a girls team for the first time in the Gothia Cup history. Tokyo Verdy, with many players from the youth national teams in the squad, is invited to play in the G17 class.
Three years ago the B16 team from Tokyo Verdy became the first Japanese team ever to win Gothia Cup. Now the club is ready to create history again as their G17 team will be the first Japanese girls team ever in Gothia Cup.
“Some of us have played together for six years, others only for a year. We have a mix of players born between 2000 and 2005”, the team captain Shino Matsuda says.
She is one of six players in the team from the the Japanese youth national teams and she is used to win nice trophies. The team has won the Japanese championship in their age group seven times.
Even though she has played tournaments abroad with the national team, this is the first time she gets the opportunity to play a foreign tournament with the club team. The reason it is Gothia Cup is because they got got inspired of the boys in the club.
”Their victory in the tournament 2015 was a big achievement for the club and a great memory and source to inspiration for the rest of us. I really look forward to come to Sweden and play Gothia Cup”, Matsuda says.
Besides the football, what do you look forward to most in Sweden?
– Many people in Sweden are so beautiful! Then I look forward to eat good food, the wonderful nature and the sunsets.
All of the teams in the G17 class will be presented later this week.
