Who may participate?

All clubs, which are members of their FIFA affiliated national associations, are welcome to participate in the Gothia Cup. In countries where football is operated by the schools we also allow teams affiliated by their school football association. The tournament begins with a group play. Teams are divided into groups of four or five, where all teams are playing each other once. The first and second team of the group qualify for “Play off A”, the other teams of the group for “Play off B”. The tournament is played under all applicable FIFA or Swedish FA rules. All players must be insured, both for games and leisure time. Arrival for all teams is on Sunday July 16. Kick-off for the group round games  is on Monday, July 17.

Number of players per team

There is no limit to the number of players in each team. However only 7 substitutes are allowed in each match of 11-a-side. In classes B12, B11, G11 and G12 you are allowed to have unlimited numer of players during a single match, but only 7 on the playing field simultaneously. All players must be able to show proof of age and identity.

We recommend that all players use the same shirt number throughout the tournament.


Dispensations will automatically be given to two players per squad who are maximum one year over aged (11 a side). This only applies to 11-a-side categories. For 7-a-side, no dispensation will automatically be accepted. Dispensations for 7-a-side teams can be applied by contacting the Gothia Cup office. Note that in 11-a-side categories you can’t have more than two over aged players on the players list, i.e. you can’t switch them between matches.

Girls may play in boys teams in all classes as long as the regulations for age categories are followed.

Number of teams in the tournament

In recent years we have not been able to accept all teams that wished to join. We can at most receive 1150 teams with accommodation at the school, 150 teams in hotels, 230 local teams and 70 teams arranging own accommodation. A total of  1600 teams. The teams that have registered and paid the registration fee has first priority. Registration counts as the date we receive the registration fee. Keep in mind that most categories tend to be fully booked very early.

Categories of participation

Category A- School Accommodation:
July 16-22. Minimum one, maximum four leaders per team may stay in the school. Everyone staying at the school has to pay the accommodation cost. Sleeping bag or mattresses are not included in the price. The Gothia Card is included in the fee. You can rent beds and bedding from us for an additional cost.  The first meal is dinner on July 16 and the last meal is lunch on July 22. NOTE: If your team must arrive before or leave after these dates, you must contact Gothia Cup. Extra night fee 20 USD/pers/night. Max. 1150 team i n this category.

Category B- Hotel Accommodation:
Only for booking through the Gothia Cup. Breakfast and Gothia Card is included in the prices. Lunch and dinner vouchers for meals at nearby schools can be purchased. Max. 150 teams in this category.

Category C- Own Accommodation:
Teams arranging  their own accommodation. Maximum 70 teams in this category. All participants in this category need to pay a participant fee that includes the Gothia Card. There is a limited number of teams accepted in this category. The category C is normally fully booked in October.

The Gothia Card includes



Return transfer between airport/railway station/ferry terminal in Gothenburg and your place of accommodation is included in the accommodation cost. Note that there is only one return transfer per team/group of teams. The transfer is exclusively for teams, thus NOT for accompanying people.

Leader Plus card

Each team receives two Team Leader Cards, giving entry to the Gothia Leaders’ Party, a Gothia Cup Coach polo and entrance to Gothia Leaders’ Sports Bar.

Extra nights

For teams that have travel arrangements that require extra nights before or after the tournament, this can be arranged (maximum 2 nights) in a specific school. When the tournament start the team move to its regular school. If the extra night is after the tournament the team will be moved from it´s regular school to the specific school for extra nights.

No meals are served during the extra nights. The cost per night is EURO 15 (USD 20).

School accommodation

We reserve us the right during the tournament to move a team from their school accommodation to be lodge in another school.
For teams with school accommodation the team manager as indicated on the Participants’ list is responsible for the team´s players behaviour at the school. Please read the Regulations for accommodation in the Official Regulations.

Insurances, responsibility

Make sure that all your players are insured both on and off the playing field. The Gothia Cup does not carry any group insurance protecting participants in case of injury, illness, theft or damage to property. Participants from countries that have no medical insurance agreement with Sweden must have personal medical insurance.



For teams reaching the finals, each player will receive a medal, and the teams the specially designed Gothia Cup trophy. For teams reaching the finals in the B play-off there will be medals and a trophy. The two loosing teams in the A play off semi final will receive a third place trophy and bronze medals during halftime of the final in their class.

A trophy is awarded the best club. Points are awarded as follows:

By equal points the club with fewer teams taking part wins.

Cancelation of the tournament and Force Majeure

In the event that the tournament can’t be held or is postponed due to events beyond the control of the tournament organizers (force majeure*) or due to events which are not attributable to wrongful intent or gross negligence or the tournament organizers, the tournament organizers cannot be held liable by the delegations for any damages, costs or losses incurred, such as transportation costs, accommodation costs, costs for additional orders, financial losses etc. Under these circumstances, the tournament organizers reserve the right to either retain the entire registration/accommodation fee and to use it for a future tournament, or to reimburse the delegations after deducting costs already incurred for the organization of the tournament and which could not be recovered from third parties.

*The Gothia Cup is in no way responsible for injury or economic loss which may arise in the case of war, warlike events, civil war, revolution or civil disturbances or because of the actions of the authorities, strikes, lockouts, blockades or similar events.

Entry & Payments

Please keep in mind that most of the categories are fully booked very early. To be secured a sport in the tournament – register and pay the entry fee as soon as possible. The time of your registration counts from the day we receive the registration fee. The registration fee must be paid within 30 days of submitting the registration online (thus no later than april 10th). Accommodation fee must be paid no later than May 10th  2017. Otherwise, we can not guarantee your participation. For hotel see your booking confirmation.

Once we receive the payment of your registration fee we will confirm your registration.

Note that all bank transaction fees have to be paid for by the teams. You have to pay in the currency (Euro or USD) that is the most ”natural” currency in your country. Please observe that we do not accept any personal or company cheques.

Important dates

September 10: Online registration form for next year’s tournament opens.

May 10: Last date for the accommodation fee/participation fee for all participants who stay in a school, a hotel or other. Both leaders and players pay this fee. You can cancel players until June 10, after that a doctors certificate is required.

June 10: Final date for payments of extra orders as extra Gothia Cards, extra Leaders Card, special food or meal cards. Also the deadline to cancel a player.  After that a doctor’s certificate is required.

July 16: Arrival day, no matches are played.

July 17: The matches begin. The Opening Ceremony

21-22 July: Finals
