The former Swedish international football player Johan Elmander and his wife Amanda are on their way to Gothenburg and Gothia Cup together with the Girls 16 team GP de Tavene from Mozambique. ”I am proud of the possibility to make a contribution to this project”, Johan Elmander says.
This Friday the Mozambique Girls 16 team GP Tavene flies from Maputo to Gothenburg to play in Gothia Cup for the first time next week. This is possible thanks to a joint project between Gothia Cup, Futebol dá força and Turkish Airlines.
“We support young girls by building confidence and leadership through football. We educate and coach young leaders and football coaches to create safe spaces for girls where they can get more self-esteem, more knowledge about their rights and tools to make their dreams come true”, Cecilia Safaee says.
Safaee founded the non-profit organization Futebol dá força (Football gives strength) to promotes girls rights and opportunities through football, in both Mozambique and Sweden as well as in other countries.
Among other things Futebol dá força runs a national girls’ football league in Mozambique where the participation in Gothia Cup is awarded as first prize.
Turkish Airlines, who fly to more destinations than any other airline, fly the team back and forth and Gothia Cup cover all the expenses in Gothenburg.
“We believe in sports as an exceptional opportunity to unite people from various countries and this is a unique effort which both supports young girls and build bridges between different cultures. We are proud of being able to give this team the opportunity to participate by sponsor their flights”, Ms. Seda Kalyoncu, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications at Turkish Airlines, says.
Thomas Anderson, sales manager at Gothia Cup, says:
”Futebol dá força and Cecilia are doing an amazing job, and we are so pleased that Turkish Airlines brings the girls here. Now it’s our turn to help them make their dreams come true”.
Johan Elmander, who last year ended a long and successful football career, has played for the Turkish side Galatasaray and is involved in the club even after quit playing. For him and his wife Amanda the decision to go to Mozambique together with a film crew was easy to make.
“I am proud of the possibility to make a contribution to this project. I will do my very best to motivate and inspire the girls to discover their potential”, Johan Elmander says.
