Benfica is ready to kick off - Gothia Cup

Benfica is ready to kick off

It was time for the girls age twelve from Benfica to finally enter the field during the day (Tuesday). Mountain FC from Canada was the opponent team. The teams played nice football and Benfica were the winning team after a tight game.

Both team kicked off the game with full speed. Mountain FC managed to put pressure on Benficas half of the field and had most of the possession. Benfica tried to pass the ball throughout every situation and didn’t get stressed. And that gave result. Seventeen minutes in to the first half Erica scored the club’s first Gothia Cup goal.

– I think it was a good game and it’s so fun to be here and play, says Erica.

But the joy didn’t last long. Mountain FC equalised the game two minutes after and the result after the first half was 1-1.

This is the first year teams from Benfica participate in the tournament. The girls goes to Benfica schools and some of them used to play with boys. The team that they play with here is new. Marco is the coach and he’s looking forward to the tournament.

– We have gathered the best girls from the schools and different teams so this is their first games together, says Marco.

The second half looked much as the first. Both of the team wanted to have the possession and were organized on the field. They created nice combinations and Mountain FC had a shot in the crossbar. But Erica was the one who got the last word. In the middle of the second half she scored her second goal. The game ended 2-1 for Benfica.

Erica scored two goals and the team won their first game

– It’s was a tight game between two good teams. We don’t know so much about our opponents and we’ll take one game at a time, but I hope we manage to qualified for the play off A, says Marco.

The team arrived yesterday to Gothenburg. They missed their connection flight in Germany and the journey took longer than expected. In total three teams from Benfica that participates in this years tournament. They are all girls in age twelve, fifteen and sixteen.

– It’s amazing to be here and the tournament is great! We got to represent Portugal during the opening ceremony yesterday and it was an incredible night. That will be a nice memory for all of us, says Marco.
