The success with free livestream will return in 2018!
Last year, nearly 850,000 people watched live-streamed games from the Gothia Cup. This year, we will continue to focus on bringing free live-streamed games from the tournament.
“We have been able to do this thanks to SKF who sponsors the project,” said Niclas Freiholtz, Competition General.
When the cooperation with SKF was extended for last year’s tournament, the live-streaming fee was removed and anyone who had access to the Gothia Cup website or app was given the opportunity to see the matches for free. And it went better than Niclas Freiholtz and his team were expecting.
“Since we did this in earlier years, but behind a paywall, we did not have so many numbers to go on. Therefore it was very interesting to see how much interest there was when it became free. And it exceeded our expectations, says Niclas.
In total, there were 1.9 million views, 850,000 unique viewers and a total of 80,000 hours streamed from the platforms.
“It’s a very technical project with all the cameras to be mounted and all the internet to be connected. But it went better than we expected. When you as a viewer feel that it works and streaming becomes a good product, you want to watch several times.
This year, approximately 1,300 matches will be streamed live from almost 30 fields around Gothenburg. And depending on the conditions in Alingsås, where Gothia Cup expands this year, there may be some fields there too. The finals are broadcasted as usual with commentators and re-runs.
Why is it important for Gothia Cup to offer this service?
“The Gothia Cup shall be a meeting place for the whole world and this is a way for us to make it possible even for those who can not be here. Both supporters, parents and siblings should have the opportunity to participate in the event, at least in a digital way, and to see their family members play on the other side of the world.
Carola Kylin is Director Group Marketing and Communication at SKF and she is also pleased with the big interest last year.
“It’s wonderful that the free live-streaming was so successful. We are incredibly proud to be the main partner for the Gothia Cup and to help more people around the world to take part in the tournament and experience our beautiful hometown of Gothenburg, “said Carola Kylin.
