Gothia Cup goes Middle East
Gothia Cup starts a new tournament in the Middle East. The intention is to play the first tournament in Abu Dhabi in 2019.
Gothia Cup was first played in Gothenburg in 1975. Since two years ago, Gothia Cup has a sister tournament in Shenyang, China, and now it is time for the World Youth Cup to start a new tournament, in Abu Dhabi.
“We want to contribute to develop the football in a part of the world where the interest for the sport is growing fast. Gothia Cup’s mission is to increase youth’s knowledge and understanding for other cultures and religions. By creating a new meeting place for the world’s youth, in Abu Dhabi, we will take the next step in this mission”, says Dennis Andersson, Secretary General of Gothia Cup.
The aim is to create another global tournament, making it possible to even more children and adolescents to play football.
“This part of the world is a geographic hub, centrally located for many people and therefor easily accessible to many”, says Dennis Andersson.
Dr Shaikha Al Maskari, Chairperson Al Maskari Holding:
”The Al Maskari family is proud to enter this exclusive long term partnership with Gothia Cup to bring the world’s largest youth football tournament from Sweden to the Middle East. The values shared and lessons learned by children both on and off the pitch exemplify the unifying principles made possible through team sport. The United Arab Emirates, home to over 200 nationalities and a global showcase of mutliculturalism and inclusiveness, is the natural host country for this preeminent event.”
